Grandfatherly advice from Nonno

Do you have something on your mind or something you need to get off your chest? Nonno gives grandfatherly advice to YOUR questions!

6 yr old Trevor asks: My mommy says I have to clean my room every night before I go to bed. Do I really have to?

Nonno says: Can you imagine what would happen to Harvey Rumplemeyer's space-time ship if he didn't keep it clean? The ship would be too heavy and he'd never be able go anywhere! Besides, Harvey knows it's very important for your health and well being that you live in a clean environment so, yes, you have to. Besides, as old as she may be, that nice lady that feeds you every day is your mommy and you love her and want her to be happy right? What better way is there to show mommy (and daddy, too) that you love her than by doing what she says?

10 yr old Amelia asks: My body is changing and I don't know what to do! Why is my body changing?

Nonno says: Oh, my! Your body is changing? Are you turning into one of those Grumplejinks Harvey Rumplemeyer encountered on Pluto? Or maybe you're turning into a Grousemongrel like the kind Lily McGriffin ran into on Venus! Is your hair falling out and are your teeth getting bigger? No? Hmmm, this is serious. If you're not turning into a Grumplejink or a Grousemongrel, then you must be GROWING UP! YECH!! Oh well, there's nothing you can do for it except sell everything you own and accept the fact that one day soon, God willing, you'll be old just like mommy and daddy! How horrible! JK :) Growing up is an exciting time for every girl and boy! It's ok to grow up and you'll notice many changes to your body as you get older. But if you're really concerned about it, it's best to talk to your mommy and daddy. They can tell you just what to expect because - shhhh! This is secret... THEY WENT THROUGH IT TOO! Shhh! Don't tell anyone....

8 yr old Jerry asks: Why is the blackboard all blurry at school?

Nonno says: Well, it could be because you're turning into a Snigglesnort like the kind Harvey Rumplemeyer encountered on Jupiter but I tend to think maybe you need to be wearing glasses. Tell your teacher about the problem and then tell your mommy and daddy. Your teacher may move you closer to the board and mommy and daddy will probably take you to an Optometrist - pronounced 'ahp' 'tom' 'eh' 'trist' - that's a special kind of doctor that looks at people's eyes and can help them determine if they need glasses or not. They're usually very good but if your doctor holds up her fingers and says, "How many fingers am I holding up?" RUN! She's really a Snuggleupagainst and she'll hug you to death! YECH!!

11 yr old Tommy asks: All my friends go to church on Sunday but I don't. Should I go to church?

Nonno says: I believe it's important for every boy and girl to be grounded in faith but this is a personal issue that you should discuss with your mom and dad. Church can be a good influence on you and your family. It allows you to build social ties, teaches you morality, and can give you a sense of purpose. And best of all, it can teach you how to talk to God and, for me, that's the most important reason of all to go!

12 yr old Virginia asks: My teacher says God's not real and no one can prove He exists. Is God real?

Nonno says: Oh, my! For some people, saying God's not real is like saying there's no Santa Claus! Like Tommy's question, this is a very personal decision that YOU have to make. As for me, I believe that yes, God is real and He provides the proof of His existence Himself. Just look around at all the many things in the world, including the world itself. Where did it come from? Did it just happen? Really? With all the many different species of animal and varieties of plant life? If you look around, I mean really look around with your whole being and not just your mind, you'll see that there is a Creator behind everything that exists in the world today. Some of those creations are man-made, like cars and planes and buildings, but other creations, like the sky, and trees, and even the planet itself can only have been created by a Higher Being.

And yes, Virginia, Santa Claus is real, too! :)

7 yr old Debbie asks: My daddy's birthday is next week. How do I make a birthday cake?

Nonno says: In the oven. With heat. :) Wow! What a special occassion! Birthday's are always fun! It's great that you want to celebrate the day that really old man that plays with you and tickles you every day and tells you stories was born. Baking a cake can be a special way for you to show him that you love him, too. Since you're so young, I suggest you ask mommy to help you. A kitchen can be a dangerous place for adults so you can imagine what it's like for younger people! With mommy's help, you can have a cake ready in no time! :)

Debbie followed up with: But my mommy is in Heaven so what can I do?

Nonno says: Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your mommy's passing. But don't worry! :) You can still surprise your daddy with a cake for his birthday! Just ask your grandmother or some other woman adult you know really well to help you. I'm sure one of them will help. And if not, give daddy a big hug, push him into the kitchen, and make him help you bake his cake! I guarantee he'll be surprised at that! :)
